Local Dunedin author Raymond Huber has just released Flight of the Honey Bee (Walker Books), a rather beautiful look at how bees gather pollen and make honey.

The main character is Scout, who we spend a day with as she encounters various obstacles and goes about her duties as a member of the hive. Each page also includes useful facts about bees and honey. The illustrations are great – colourful, bold and accurate.

Given the plight of honeybees (August is National Bee Aware Month in NZ), and their importance to us, this is a timely book for the whole family – maybe one to read aloud while enjoying a slice of bread and honey! Really, sticky honey on the pages seems only appropriate….
