Weak at the knees – again.

The utterly beautiful book I and several colleagues are swooning over at the moment is Animalium: Welcome to the Museum,  by Jenny Broom, a juicy, delicious large hardback that is a wonderful wander through a virtual museum with a slightly Victorian sensibility – like those actual museums you went to as a kid, with dusty, mysterious things in glass cases and nothing interactive in sight. For those nostalgic for a hit of museums-as-they-used-to-be, across the road from us at the Otago Museum they still maintain the much beloved Animal Attic – where everything is now almost the same sad biscuity colour, and we can all be grateful the days of Victorian adventurer-collector are over.
This is apparently the first in a series and I cannot wait to see the others. The drawings are just exquisite and each of the more than 160 ‘specimens’ are accompanied with useful facts and just the information you need to know. Have a look at this:
